The Wimbledon brief has changed. Ten years ago clients up on the hill asked for a bigger kitchen. Now, with striking regularity, the wish list reads like a small resort: pool, gym, sauna, sometimes a treatment room, occasionally a golf simulator.
The village’s big detached houses and deep plots can absorb this, which is rare in London, and the result is a building type with its own name in our office: the leisure wing.
This piece is about doing one inside the house properly, because indoors is where the engineering gets serious. Garden courts and pavilions are a different subject with their own rules, and we’ll leave them at the gate.
A room that fights the house
Start with the unglamorous truth that governs everything: an indoor pool is not a room with water in it. It’s a piece of environmental plant wearing architecture.
The water sits around 28 to 30 degrees, the air above it slightly warmer, and that warm wet air wants to destroy your house.
It carries litres of moisture toward every cold surface and every gap in the vapour barrier, and a pool hall detailed like an ordinary room will quietly rot the structure around it.
